Safety Concerns: Closing Parliament's Bars Could Expose MPs to Greater Risks

In a recent discussion, Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell, raised concerns about the safety implications of closing all bars within the Parliamentary estate. Following a recent incident involving an alleged drink-spiking, Parliament’s notable pub, Strangers’ Bar, is temporarily closed while investigations are underway. Powell emphasized that closing these venues may lead MPs and staff to seek out drinking spots outside Parliament’s secure area, increasing their vulnerability.

During an interview on BBC Radio 5Live, Powell suggested that investing millions in security is counterproductive if people are encouraged to leave the protection of the estate for leisure activities. She expressed a willingness to engage in public debate about the future of drinking establishments within Parliament but indicated that she did not perceive significant support for their closure.

Powell stressed the importance of maintaining security for MPs, especially since external venues lack the same level of protection from police presence and the governance of the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS), which addresses misconduct allegations. With heightened security measures in place due to threats against MPs, Powell argues it is crucial to provide these services within the estate rather than allowing staff to venture off into potentially dangerous situations.
