Bergen is without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking cities in the world. One which somehow finds a balance between innovation and heritage with ease.

It can be very cold and sometimes rather wet, but these usually adverse conditions add to Bergen’s charm.

BERGEN: A BRIEF HISTORY

Bergen once was a vitally important seaport and to this day, there are still remnants of this rich history – the most impressive of which being the wooden buildings ofBryggen, which is actually a Unesco world heritage site. It is known as the gateway to the ‘fjords’ and ‘Norway’s second city’, due to it being surrounded by seven hills, seven fjords and also being Norway’s second biggest city.

THINGS TO DO

Despite having a small town feel, Bergen is one of Norway’s largest cities and thus, there is so much to see and do during your stay. Here’s our top picks.

BRYGGEN

Synonymous with Norway’s second city, Bryggen is the first thing most people think of when you think of Bergen is this. The quaint little buildings, the wooden sidewalk – it’s astounding. It can often feel like being on the set of a movie – this should be your first port of call.

FL0YEN / FL0IBANEN

Fl0Yen is the intimidating mountain of Bergen that offers incredible views for miles and miles. There’s also lots to do up at the top too.

You can either walk to the top or get the Fl0ibanen, which is the railway that takes you up through to the top of Fl0yen. This is an experience in itself and offers several photo opportunities on the way to the main event. It’s also great for those who don’t fancy the walk up to the top. You can also get it back down if you don’t want to face the descent either. You can walk up and down via a path however if you want to experience Fliryen in its full capacity – it should take about an hour each way.

MUSEUMS

One thing that Bergen does exceptionally well is museums. There are museums for basically everything.

From Art to heritage, even the world’s largest gingerbread city – Bergen really has it all when it comes to museum-worthy spectacles.

MARKETS

Bergen has a famous fish market that is definitely worth a walk through even if you’re not hungry. This is a throwback to Bergen’s rich port history and a surefire sign that it is still thriving to this day.

GETTING ABOUT

Everything is walking distance. There’s no need for cabs or Ubers really you can get everywhere in 20 minutes (at the very most) walking.

This just adds to the small town feel which is an absolute treat and makes the whole place feel like home from the off.
